How Posi-flate Actually Seals — and a Custom Build That Survives Silica Sand



Most butterfly valves seal by jamming the disc into a static seat. That friction is exactly what wears them out. Posi-flate does it the other way around — and on abrasive service like sand handling, that difference is the whole ballgame.

 

How It Works

A Posi-flate is a quarter-turn butterfly valve with an inflatable seat. As the disc rotates to the closed position, it makes only casual contact with the seat — so there's very little friction, wear, or torque on the way there. Once the disc is closed, the seat inflates with air pressure against it, giving you more sealing surface and even pressure distribution all the way around for a bubble-tight shutoff. Before the valve opens, the seat deflates first, freeing the disc to rotate clean.


Two things fall out of that design. First, because it seals with air pressure instead of friction, it needs less torque — which means a smaller actuator and a lower overall valve cost. Second, the seat automatically compensates for wear as it goes, which is why Posi-flate runs one to three million cycles even in abrasive service. Conventional resilient-seat valves can't say that — disc impingement shaves the seat and the clock starts ticking on a leak.


A Custom Solution: Silica Sand Silo Cut-Off

Here's a real build that shows what the platform can do. The application was a cut-off valve at the discharge outlet of a silica sand storage silo — about as abrasive a service as it gets, and a dead ringer for proppant and frac-sand handling across the Permian.


The solution was a 10" Series 485 configured for the duty:

·       Cast iron housing and disc for the abrasive load

·       Black polyurethane seat — built to take sand without shredding

·       Tork-Mate 690 Series double-acting actuator

·       Automated seat-inflation controls, NEMA 4/12

·       Trak-Lok limit switch, NEMA 4/12, for position feedback

That's not a valve off a shelf with a sticker on it — that's a package spec'd to the material, the actuation, and the controls the site actually runs.
